I'd even go so far as to say "duty." That's a pretty strong word, and I hope it doesn't put anyone off. ![]() Developing a sense of ownership and commitment to the College. What do you mean by "culture of philanthropy"?Ī. If we are successful in doing that, we will go far toward instilling a culture of philanthropy at IC. We need to show our alumni and friends - and students, too - all the ways that Ithaca College is better than ever at preparing well-rounded community leaders, and that supporting our mission is still a solid investment in a productive future. Our job, basically, is to reach out to all the people associated with the College and share with them our excitement about what it has become and is becoming. Advancement encompasses alumni relations and marketing communications, as well as fund-raising. What do you hope to accomplish in advancement?Ī. As a result, this is a place where one person - or a team of very dedicated people, such as I have - can make a real difference. I get to interact directly with the deans and the faculty and the students. You can definitely accomplish more in a community like this. Ithaca College was so appealing because it was just the right size. Semmler: After working 20 years in development at Cornell, I arrived here and fell in love with the place. Recently the ICQ managed to get her to sit still long enough to answer a few questions about the present and the future of the College to which she devotes so much energy. As leader of alumni relations, development, and marketing communications, Semmler and her team spend a great deal of time on the road, raising awareness and support for Ithaca College. Since 1999 Shelley Semmler has been vice president of institutional advancement and a tireless representative of the College, in Ithaca and around the United States. She is on the road almost as much as she's in her office - some months even more. She's tiny but indomitable, and has boundless energy. She's dynamic and fun-loving, hard-working and sociable.
